founded the Parliamentary Turkish Friendship Circle after the
earthquake that struck Istanbul in 1999.

He was instrumental in ensure that humanitarian funds made it to
Istanbul in sufficient quantities and speed to make a material
difference to those who had been left injured and homeless.

He has visited Turkey on a number of occasions and has championed
Turkey’s accession to Europe as a staunch ally in NATO and the war
