"Air Tax
Plans Bad for South East Airports" - MEP
The Member of the
European Parliament for South East England, Nirj Deva, has
criticised plans proposed by the German Government to impose a tax
on airline fuel, describing them as “bad for business and bad for
the South East”.
This proposed measure has caused outrage among representatives of
the aviation industry who are concerned about possible job losses at
the Manston and Southampton Airport sites and the possible negative
side-effects to the local economy.
Speaking from Brussels, Mr Deva said:
"These proposals are highly irresponsible and have the power to
undermine the economy of the South as a result of less air traffic
and job losses.
“The airline industry is currently suffering from high fuel prices
and to impose extra taxes on fuel will seriously jeopardise the
future of many smaller airlines flying out of Manston and
Southampton Airports.
“I will do all I can to oppose the passage of this legislation in
the European Parliament.
“This proposed tax puts airlines from EU Member States at a
disadvantage when compared to the rest of the world. If imposed, it
will be another blow against the competitiveness of the British
economy and a slap in the face to the people of our region."
