South
East MEP to Push for
"No" Vote on European Constitution |
Reacting to
the news that Tony Blair is likely to call a Referendum on the
European Constitution, the Member of the European Parliament for
South East England, Nirj Deva, has announced that he will be pushing
hard for a ‘no’ vote on the proposals.
The decision to hold a poll vindicates the Conservatives two year
campaign on the issue and is backed up by a recent ICM Poll of
55,000 voters which showed that nearly 90 per cent of the electorate
wanted a say on the EU Constitution.
Speaking from his Brussels office, the MEP said:
“After months of telling the people that the EU Constitution is
insignificant Tony Blair has finally realised that people that seen
through his spurious arguments.
“In the event of any referendum, I will be fighting hard to ensure
that a successful ‘no’ vote is recorded by the people of Britain”.
“Tony Blair seems hell-bent on rubber-stamping a Constitution which
surrenders control of British sovereignty on a whole host of issues
– from taxation to transport.
“I am confident that the British people will not allow Blair to take
this gamble with the future of the nation”.
