New EU
Driving Laws "Unfair to
the People of the South East" - MEP |
South East MEP Nirj Deva has hit out against new
European Union driving laws which are set to massively inconvenience local
people with the compulsory medical checks and driving licence renewals every
five years and for all drivers.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the MEP said:
“I will fight tooth and nail against these ludicrous proposals. Not only are
these EU suggestions likely to increase the amount of bureaucracy piled upon the
average driver, but they are also completely and utterly unnecessary.
“At present, the driving licence belongs to the driver from date of issue until
the driver reaches the age of seventy. This system works perfectly well and
there is no need for this new renewals scheme which will only create red tape
and inconvenience for the people of the region who will be forced to reapply for
their licences every five years.
“When a driver in XXXX suffers from a major health problem it is their duty to
notify the relevant authority and they will then decide whether they can
continue driving. Our system has resulted in British drivers being statistically
proven as among the safest drivers in Europe.
“This Directive, however states that drivers with a variety of health problems
ranging from angina, renal disorders, epilepsy and those fitted with pacemakers
will now be subject to intrusive medical check ups.
“I fail to see why law-abiding, safe drivers in South East England should be
punished and grossly inconvenienced by these potty new laws. I will be voting
against this intrusive directive at the earliest possible opportunity”. |
