Letter
to the Editor: The future of the
Conservatives in the European Parliament |
Dear Sir,
Over the past weeks and months, many local residents will have read
a considerable amount about David Cameron’s promise to Tory members
during the Leadership election to withdraw the Conservatives in the
European Parliament from the pro-federal EU grouping, the European
People’s Party.
I strongly supported David Cameron in achieving this objective and
on Thursday (13th), he delivered on his promise. Whilst I am sorely
disappointed that we won’t be leaving the EPP Group immediately, I
am delighted that David has taken this very positive step forward.
From June 2009, the Conservatives will be leaving the pro-federalist
group and establishing our own alliance with the recent Czech
election winners, the Civic Democrats and other mainstream parties
of Government and opposition from across Europe. Contrary to what
some parts of the press may say, our new group will have no
relationship or contact with “fascists”, racists” or “nutters”.
Forming a new group without French and German federalists will mean
that I am able to deliver for South East England in a much more
effective fashion; working with partners from across the EU who
share our passion to fight against an EU super-state, protect our
currency and tear up damaging regulations on our businesses.
I would like to lay on record my thanks to my constituents for the
many letters and phone calls of support they have made to my office
in support of this move. They really are greatly appreciated.
