East MEP Nirj Deva
votes “no” on European Constitution
Nirj Deva, Member of the European Parliament for Canterbury has
today (Thursday) voted against the adoption of the European
Constitution (Lisbon Treaty) at a heated meeting of the European
Parliament in Strasbourg.
Deva, one of only 115 of the 735 Members of the European Parliament
to vote against the Constitution said:
“I have received hundreds of letters from people in Canterbury
urging me to oppose the Constitution. Not one person has urged me to
support this wrong-headed document.
“If adopted into British law, the Constitution will result in the
surrender of sixty-one policy vetoes currently possessed by the
British Government in the Council of Ministers and the creation of a
permanent European Union President and Foreign Minister.
“The British people are clearly against this Treaty. Gordon Brown
must keep the manifesto pledge his party was elected on in 2005 and
give us the referendum we deserve and demand”.
