Sir:
I was somewhat amused by Martin Salter’s disingenuous attack on
David Cameron’s plans to withdraw the Conservatives in the European
Parliament (Week in Westminster, 14th June) from the federalist
European People’s Party.
The EPP Group has a Basic Charter which commits it to "compete for
the realisation of a United States of Europe”. The EPP manifesto
includes a single EU seat at the United Nations, a pan-European
income tax to be levied by MEPs and a Europe-wide army and Police
force.
The Conservative Party cannot and must not say one thing in Britain
and then do the opposite in Brussels and Strasbourg. That is why
David Cameron is committed to forming a new centre-right grouping in
the Parliament that is opposed to European integration and shares
our vision of a free-market, Atlanticist Europe of nation states.
There is no chance whatsoever of the Party being allied to any
“fascists and nutters”. The thought of an alliance with the Dutch
Christian Union has been ruled out.
Possible partners in our new group include the recent Czech General
Election winners, the Civic Democrats, the free market Law and
Justice Party from Poland and mainstream parties of Government and
opposition from Latvia, Sweden, Ireland, Italy and France.
Ultimately, we hope to be joined by allies from Lithuania, Denmark,
Finland and Estonia.
So there’s you answer, Martin. Yes, I’ll be signing up.
Yours etc,
Nirj Deva DL MEP
Member of the European Parliament for Berkshire
