South East of England MEP Nirj Deva joined more than thirty thousand
students from across the country on Sunday (26th) to protest against the
Government’s controversial plans to introduce “top-up fees” of up to
£3,000 on university courses.
Marching with the Shadow Secretary of State for Education Damian Green MP,
Nirj Deva met with students from universities across the South East of
England.
Imogen Hitchcock, who is currently studying at the University of
Southampton said:
“I have come on the march today to protest against the Labour Party’s tax
on learning. I am currently struggling with my student debts, but they’re
tiny compared to friends of mine who have debts of more than £20,000!”
Speaking after the march Nirj Deva said:
“The anti tuition and top-up fees march in London on Saturday, sends a
clear signal to this arrogant Labour Government that students are sick and
tired of being lumbered with debt.
“Despite their claims that they have abolished tuition fees in Scotland,
the Liberal Democrats remain committed to charging students for their
education whilst the Labour Party has openly reneged on their manifesto
promise not to introduce ‘top-up’ fees.
”The Conservative Party is the only political party in the UK that is one
hundred percent dedicated to abolishing tuition fees and ‘top-up’ fees”. |
